Amazon is already capable of providing same-day and one-day delivery to 72% of the US population, according to research from RBC Capital Markets, reaping the benefits of investments that have seen the retailer triple the size of its US logistics infrastructure over the past four years.

Amazon’s capability to provide fast delivery to households across the West and East Cost, as well as the South, underlines why the retailer is now ready to prepare the roll-out of one-day shipping as a default service for Prime members, as stated by the company in late April 2019.

As Amazon keeps raising the stakes, the retailer will further raise customer expectations and increase the cost to compete in ecommerce, while attacking one of the main competitive advantages of physical retail: the immediate fulfillment of needs to on-demand customers. With inventory turnover to accelerate at Amazon’s DCs, brands will be challenged to build further flexibility in their supply chains, enabling them to tap into growth with America’s ecommerce leader as it widens the competitive gap.
