Walmart in the US is ramping up its investment in the pet care sector, launching an online pet pharmacy, expanding its online category assortment and opening in-store veterinary clinics across its store portfolio. Walmart’s online pet pharmacy, Walmart Pet Rx, will enable shoppers to purchase prescription medications and have them delivered to their homes or to stores from later this month.

With global online household and pet care sales due to outperform consumer spending, expanding at 15.2% CAGR during our 2018-2023 forecast period, Walmart is tapping into a major growth segment, while continuing to strengthen its digital ecosystem at a time when ecommerce giant Amazon is ramping up competition in the pet care space. Walmart’s additional plans to roll out 100 veterinary clinics over the next year will help to position stores as experiential service-hubs, reflecting Walmart’s overarching strategy to leverage stores as a strategic advantage.

As Western trends of ageing societies and pet humanization continue to take shape, retailers will prioritize investment in the pet care sector. To tap into this opportunity, brands should partner on range curation with innovative specialist lines, online assortment suitable for replenishment schemes, and in-store pet experiences.
