Walmart is launching free next-day delivery on 220,000 general merchandise items from Walmart.com. The delivery service will roll out gradually, with plans to reach approximately 75% of the US population by the end of this year, including 40 of the top 50 major US metro areas. The minimum order value will be USD35, with specific assortments varying by customer location.

The development of Walmart’s NextDay service is part of a package of enhancements to its fulfillment capabilities, including the launch of same-day grocery delivery. Walmart has also partnered with Udelv on autonomous delivery, is utilizing automated pickup towers and unmanned online grocery pickup points, is trialling the Alphabot robotics system, and is working with intermediaries through the recent acquisition of Cornershop in Mexico.

With retailers, including Amazon, investing in ever-faster fulfillment to meet growing consumer demand, CPGs will need to review their own inventory planning and distribution capabilities in anticipation of tighter time frames. CPGs should also expect stricter requirements around the optimization of packaging to meet the supply chain needs of the online channel.
