Boxed, the US-based online warehouse club, is partnering with discount grocer Lidl (owned by European market leader Schwarz Group) for delivery in parts of Georgia and New York. Entering the market in 2017, Lidl has only 68 stores in the US but operates 10,800 worldwide, presenting a major long-term opportunity for delivery partners like Boxed or Supermercato24.
Boxed, which itself sells a limited assortment of mostly bulk items, is known for being a technology-first retailer, having developed its own end-to-end retail solutions, including systems for its website interface, boxing technology, and warehouse management. With its announcement, Boxed is entering the realm of Instacart, Shipt, Amazon, and Ocado, launching a “retail as a service” offering, diversifying its revenue base and acquiring wider shopper data.
