According to retailer results in July and August*, most retailers showed improvements from the previous quarter as they benefitted from the Easter shift to Q2 and traffic improved across most channels. The biggest surprises in the quarter were Best Buy, Target, Publix, and Discounters, all of which showed remarkable improvements from the past quarter, with Best Buy continuing to show an upward trajectory, Target turning around its recent negative results, and Publix returning to positive results after a dip in Q1. Discounters’ comps in the most recent quarter were significantly higher than the rates seen in the previous 3 quarters, as both traffic and ticket contributed positively, while Home Specialists continued to report the highest comps, improving on their results from Q1. Comps from Office Specialists, Drug Stores, and Whole Foods were all negative for the quarter, weighed down by lower customer traffic.
