According to retailer results in September, October, and November*, most retailers showed significant improvements from the previous quarter, as Hurricane Irma and other natural disasters, as well as inflation, contributed positively to results. The top grocery players all achieved positive comps for the first time in the past year, while supercenters, discounters, and club stores continued to report increases. The performance in grocery was partially driven by inflationary conditions that finally rebounded from an 18-month deflationary period. Home specialists reported strong comp results for another consecutive quarter. Preparation and clean-up from the hurricanes helped drive basket sizes and trips during the quarter. Drug stores and office specialists all saw negative results in Q3, as declining traffic from the shift to online and promotional strategies both had negative impacts.
